David Lawrence Dawson of Comox passed away on May 31st 2019 at North Island Hospital. He is survived by sons Robert (Jessica) and William, his grandchildren Steven, Isaiah and Ashley, his sister Carol Longland (Lewis), his nephew Scott (Liz), his nieces Susan, Shelly (Bill Irving), and Sandy. He is predeceased by his father William Dawson, his mother Daisy Hughes (nee Kertain), Harold Hughes, and his nephew Nick Longland.
David was born on May 24th 1934 in Cumberland, British Columbia. The experience of being a child in the WWII era made an impression on him and he collected war memorabilia throughout his lifetime. In his teen years David went to work in the logging industry and he worked in the industry until his retirement. He could be seen running a loader and driving a crummy. For many years he spent his work-week in camp and home for the weekends. As a young man David developed a lifelong interest in motorcycles and was often seen gassing up at the Merville General Store in the 1950’s. His trip of a lifetime was to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota and he cherished the memories and the photos he took on the trip for many years. He enjoyed the open road on his Harley-Davidson until he was in his late 70’s.
David built his house in Comox, alongside his brother-in-law Lewis in the early 1970's. He raised his children there and it became his life-long home. He was protective of the deer who enjoyed grazing on his lawn and eating the apples from his apples trees. In his later years David especially enjoyed holiday meals with his son, Robert; grandson, Steven; and daughter in-law, Jessica. He had a fondness for Dairy Queen ice cream cakes and would show up to birthday gatherings with an ice cream cake and a bottle of pop. In his golden years David enjoyed meeting up for morning coffee with friends at Bobby’s Deli for lively conversations. He was a man who lived without ceremony and there is no memorial service upon request. A special thanks to Dr. Law and especially to his home care worker Steve who went the extra mile.
