Cowley, Robert Ray 94 of Costa Mesa, CA passed into eternal life Sunday April 6, 2014. Bob was born in Geneva, Ohio on June 22, 1919 to Ray and Naomi (Wood) Cowley who proceeded him in death as did his younger brother Kenneth Cowley.
Bob graduated from North Olmsted Ohio High School where he lettered in basketball. He joined the U.S. Army in April 1940 and served 5 years seeing combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He turned down the Purple Heart award deeming his injuries insufficient for that honor.
Bob was married to Roberta (Bobbie) nee: Garvarick for 67 years. She survives him as do their two daughters, Gayle Murray and Rayleen Hadley, 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
He was an active member of United Methodist Church, Costa Mesa and upon retiring from the United States Postal Service volunteered as a driver for the American Cancer Society for 12 years and then was a driver for Meals on Wheels for an additional 12 years. Bob was an enthusiastic member of the Angus Men's Golf Group for over 20 years. In recent years, he and Bobby were active in the Freedom Committee and felt privileged to be able to share his military history with high school students throughout Orange County.
Bob was a consummate gentleman and devoted husband and father who will be missed by all who were were fortunate enough to be in contact with his generous and loving spirit. Love you Daddy.
Services will be held at United Methodist Church Costa Mesa Saturday April 12th at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.
