Joan Beverly Royal (née Falbaum) was born in The Bronx, New York in 1936. Her father, Abraham, was a contractor, and her mother, Shari, was a homemaker. At an early age, Joan moved with her family to Virginia Beach, Virginia and then Los Angeles, California after her mother contracted tuberculosis and received treatment at City of Hope Hospital. Joan had a special bond with her brother Bert, who always called her Suzie or Brat.
Joan graduated from Hamilton High School in Los Angeles, where she was a popular member of the Parisian and Adelphian sororities. Though many suitors vied for her hand, she ultimately chose her brother’s close friend Herbert Royal. The two were married in 1956 after Herb returned from his service in the Navy during the Korean War. They went on to have three children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
After raising her family, Joan opened a jewelry store with her daughter Lauren, which eventually grew into a chain of seven locations in Southern California malls. As the company expanded, Joan’s husband, son-in-law, and son came on board, making it a true family business. Later, she was very proud to earn her associate degree and enjoyed working as a mediator for the court system.
She is survived by her daughters Lauren and Teri; son Ken and son-in-law Jack; granddaughters Becca, Devonie, and Isabel; grandsons Blake, Michael, and Alex; and great-grandchildren Sophia and Ezra. Beautiful, classy, warm, generous, and funny, she was beloved by all who crossed her path, most especially her family.
