In June of 1977, Steve joined the United States Navy. He was a Navy Diver, an Advanced Electronic Warfare Technician, part of a Covert Ops Team and served on the USS Barney DDG6. During his time in the Navy, Steve crossed the Equator and was very proud of his Shellback Certificate. He also received accommodations from many Government Agencies including the Department of Defense and the Defense Logistics Agency. In 1983, he was honorably discharged from the United States Navy. He worked as a Computer Programmer for the Department of Defense for 25 years until his retirement. Steve was a member of the Junction City American Legion of New Lexington and served as a member of the Junction City Honor Guard.
He is survived by his children Steven Payne of South Carolina, Victoria (James) Payne of Westerville, and Marie Payne of Texas; one grandson Michael Payne; one sister Nancy (Jim) Shivers of Coshocton and one brother John Payne of Hocking.
Along with his parents, Steve is also preceded in death by his sister Peggy (Payne) Prindle.
A memorial service for Steve will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 12:00 pm at Given-Dawson Funeral Home, Coshocton, with Lay-Minister Michael Abood officiating. Prior to the memorial service, the Coshocton County Honor Guard will preforming military honors. Burial will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
