David graduated in 1959 from Coshocton High School. He then attended The Ohio State University, Arizona State University and graduated from The New England Institute of Embalming in Boston. He worked in Phoenix, Boston, and Coshocton before joining The Dodge Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts where he spent the next 43 years traveling in Ohio and Kentucky selling chemicals. He retired in 2011.
David was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir and rang bells in the adult hand bell choir. He was a 37 year member of the Coshocton Community Choir; a 44 year member of the Masonic Lodge, Past President of the Coshocton Shrine Club, where he headed up food preparation for the annual Shrinabration to benefit burned and crippled children. In addition to serving twice as President of the Ohio Funeral Supply Sales Club, David was a charter member of AMREK model railroad club and on the steering committee of America in Bloom/Coshocton is Blooming.
He received the Distinguished Service Award for the All-Ohio Youth Choir and Encore Honors Choir. He also served on the March of Dimes, Pomerene Center for the Arts and Habitat for Humanities boards, along with the Alzheimer’s board, Historical Club and in the Genealogy Society.
David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lee (Derbyshire) Bown; son, Troy Bown; brother, John (Lynn) Bown; sister-in-law, Linda (Jack) Chilcote; three nieces, several great nieces, great-great nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, and brother-in-law.
After retirement, he returned to Given-Dawson Funeral Home, working part time. He enjoyed gardening, biking, traveling, and most of all being with friends. Dave had over 220 different people visit with him while he was in the care center.
In keeping with David’s wishes and his strong belief in the importance of funerals, a celebration of his life with a traditional funeral service will be held. Calling hours will be Friday, October 10, 2014, from 4-7:00 pm at Given-Dawson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at 11:00 am at the Presbyterian Church, 142 N. 4th Street, Coshocton, with Charles R. Snyder officiating. Burial will follow at Roscoe Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in David’s name to the Presbyterian Church, Coshocton Community Choir, Encore Honors Choir, Health Services of Coshocton, or to Coshocton is Blooming-Tree Fund. All envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
