Romana “Romie” Munoz, 83 years old, of Omaha, Nebraska passed away peacefully in her childhood home while on hospice care on July 18, 2023. She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 28, 1940. She graduated from WB Ray High School in 1958, and attended Del Mar College for secretarial training. At 20 years old, Romie moved to Los Angeles, California for a job opportunity. Her adventure in the 1960s inspired other family members to move to California, following in her footsteps.
In California, Romie worked for Equitable Life Insurance Company for 10 years as a secretary. She resigned and moved back to Corpus Christi, Texas and worked with special needs children and adults at the Ada Wilson Hospital. Afterwards, she worked as a private sitter in a group home for disabled individuals.
Fearless Romie then moved to Omaha, Nebraska and lived there for 20 years. She initially worked for the Catholic Church as an advocate and organizer for immigrant religious education. She would walk door to door in the neighborhoods encouraging families to join the Catholic Church and send their children to catechism. Romie was a catechist for Iglesia de San Francisco de Asis for 20 years. She was awarded a certificate for her contributions to the church. Lastly, Romie worked for the First Data Company in the packaging department before retiring.
All Romie’s hard work paid off as she purchased her very own home in downtown Omaha, Nebraska. The home was a 2-story beautiful white antique home with a separate garage. She worked very hard to keep it in good condition and was proud of her home. She wanted family and friends to visit her, and many did. During a visit she would take all visitors to the casino in Iowa for a good time.
Romie has always been independent, intelligent, passionate, and free spirited. She liked to have fun and had lots of fun in her last years with her sisters Benita and Belinda and her brother Gustavo. She had a big heart and always gave a helping hand to family and friends. She has a lot of friends whom she met when she traveled. Romie’s hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles, listening to Tejano music, dancing, weekends at the casino, trips to the beach, exercising at the YWCA, walking, and gentle yoga. What we will miss most about Romie is her beautiful smile, happy mood, and feisty nature.
Romana is survived by Oralia Cote, Manuel (Avelina) Munoz, Andrea (Manuel) Lopez, Gustavo (Elda) Munoz, Benita Cantu, and Belinda Perez.
