Richard Flores Hernandez, age 76 of Corpus Christi, Texas passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on September 19, 1947 to Augustin & Lorenza Hernandez, he was the youngest of three children. He was a Catholic and a member of Our Lady Of Pilar Church.
Richard graduated from Roy Miller High School. At the age of 17 years old he volunteered and joined the United States Navy and did two tours in Vietnam and he was honorably discharged. Richard worked for Krogers Grocery Store. Richard served our community for 25+ years in law enforcement. He graduated December 1976 out of the 27 Session of the Corpus Christi Police Academy.
Upon graduation he was assigned to the uniform division
Richard worked a beat all over the City of Corpus Christi.
He proved himself as a good officer and later transferred to the Special Services Division.
He was promoted to Senior Officer (Sgt) on August 23, 1982.
In special services Richard worked Vice and Narcotics. His call sign was 409 and his partners would joke that he started to work before you do.
Upon leaving Special Services he returned to patrol where he was an FTO. (Field Training Officer)
As an in-car supervisor Richard provided direction and guidance to new officers.
He later worked in Mopeds downtown, and soon thereafter Motors.
He had the respect and admiration of those he worked with and he left the Department in 2002.
Some of his hobby was playing electrician, being D.J Rich, he did carpentry work making birdhouses and crosses and he was a member of the Mo-Town Smokers.
He was met at the gates of heaven by his parents: Augustine and Lorenza Hernandez, and Parents in law: Esteban & Maria Rodriguez, his sister Palmera Frame, Flor Estella Luna, Max Serrata, Nephews: Lee, Lonnie Serrata, Alfred Hernandez, and Johnny Villarreal. Nieces: Laura Morris, and Maria Elizabeth (Liz)Guillen and sister in law Raquel R. Villarreal.
Richard was a good man who is loved by his family and who brought happiness to his family and friends. He was a generous, loving, selfless man who will be missed dearly. He married the love of his life Elena on October 31, 1986. He is survived by his wife of 37 years Elena R. Hernandez and their children Juan(Leslie)Fernandez III and Richard (Richie) Augustine Hernandez, Denise A. Hernandez Tefs(Santiago), Catherine Steele.
Grandchildren: Mercedez and Brooke Fernandez, Eugenio Pesina III(Karla), Francisco Pesina, Mohammed Tefs, Daniella(Jerry)Mata, Joseph Steele, Christian Cantu.
Great-grandchildren Nathan, Nicholas, Noah, Jessie Richard, Charolette, Ariel, Michael, Raphael, and Sebastian.
Richard is survived by his sister Lydia H. Jackson his nephew Larry Serrata Sr. Nieces: Linda Kierch, Lydia Garza, Clara Muguerza, Carla E. Luna and sisters and brothers-in-law Rosa Ramirez and the late Joe Ramirez, Reubena Flores, Esteban(Frances) Rodriguez, Arturo(Nora) Rodriguez and Mary Rodriguez, he has numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many many friends.
A public visitation for Richard will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Memory Gardens Funeral Home & Cemetery, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415, with a holy rosary at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will occur Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Pilar Catholic Church, 1101 Bloomington St, Corpus Christi, Texas 78416. An interment will follow at 11:00 AM at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
