Rene was born in Salineño, Texas, to Antonio and Francisca Ramos. He moved to Corpus Christi where he met his wife of 65 years, Maria Ramos, and raised his family. Rene was a US Army veteran of the Korean War and served in the Vietnam War as a civilian. He was retired from NAS-CC for the last 38 years. Rene was not one to sit idle. After retirement, he worked with his brother Wilfrido Ramos at G&R Transmission and with his good friend Javier Mejia at Hangar One. After double-knee replacement, he worked for his physical therapist providing transportation to and from therapy for patients. He was active with the Catholic churches OLPH and Holy Family. He joined the Knights of Columbus at OLPH and was one of the founding members of the chapter at Holy Family. He served as Grand Knight, leading the initiation team, and ultimately became an honorary lifetime member. Rene and his wife were always servants to God and did everything side by side. For many years, they went as missionaries to Mexico to teach Catechism and allow for others to make their sacraments. They even helped build a church there. He was active in leading retreats with Holy Family, helping Schoenstatt with Boys Walk, and working with the special needs and hearing impaired community with Father Walsh at OLPH. He was always ready for a festival, casino night, or any type of fundraiser to help his church. There wasn’t a raffle ticket he could not sell! His greatest loves were God, family, community, and country.
Rene is survived by his wife Maria and four children Anna (Israel Segura) Ramos, Christina (Joe) Ortega, Rene (Anna) Ramos, Jr., and Sylvia (Rodger) Mirabal. He is also survived by his 18 grandchildren Valerie, Joseph, Vanessa (Frank), Kristian, Victoria (Gilbert), Paulina, Christopher (Krystal), Samantha (Noah), Leslie (Michael), Emily, Jake, Noah (Mireya), Brittany (Alex), Bryan (Elise), April, Brianna (Johnny), Anjolee (AD), and Rodger, and by his 26 great-grandchildren Andrea, Frankie, Fabian, Farrah, FayeLynn, Fedrico, Kailyn, Kailee, Krystiana, Jayden, Alana, Andrew, Ashton, Alivia, Nate, Kaylee, Jazmine, Cataleya, Ezekial, Josiah, Aubree, Kendall, Michael, Huxton, Hulton, and Aesyn. Rene is also survived by his sister Belza Ramos and sisters-in-law Irene Ramos and Elida Dubuque, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Antonio and Francisca Ramos, and his siblings Carmen Salinas, Consuelo (Tex) Vidaurri, Luis (Olga) Ramos, and Wilfrido Ramos, and brother-in-law Deacon Ron Dubuque.
His wife, children and grandchildren united to provide care and support for him to continue to live life fully. The family would like to thank all the nurses and CNAs of Christus Hospice and Palliative Care who assisted the family for the last month of Rene’s care. The family is forever grateful to Rene’s angel of a grandson Joseph Verduzco who provided round the clock care and support to Rene and Maria. He was always there to make grandpa laugh, allow him to eat whatever he wanted, to enjoy Tejano music, or to make viral videos to share with the family.
