Joe was born to Juana Irene (Macias) Garza and Saturnino H. Garza on January 10, 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The youngest of six children, he graduated from Roy Miller High School in 1966 and served in the Air Force for eight years achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. It was after high school that he met Santos Gonzalez with whom he created a loving marriage which lasted over 46 years.
After leaving the Air Force, Joe worked for several years at Firestone and later at Autozone where he became affectionately known as “Big Joe” and created many friendships with his warm personality and outgoing manner. He was known for being generous and insightful and for living life with compassion, integrity and an incredible sense of humor and playfulness.
He is survived by his wife, Santos H. Garza; his daughters, Connie (Eric) Rivera and Victoria Garza; his grandchildren, Clarisa Saldana and Vincent Rivera; and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom he loved so very much.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Juana Irene and Saturnino H. Garza; his son, Saturnino G. Garza; and his brothers and sisters, Alicia De Luna, Saturnino M. Garza, Rogelio M. Garza, Gloria G. Reta, and Maria Del Rosario Vidaurri.
Visitation and Rosary will be held Monday, June 23, 2014 at 7pm at Funeraria Del Angel, 3442 Holly Road, Corpus Christi, Texas. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at 2 pm at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
