Janette Flowers was called home by our heavenly Father on November 5, 2020, at the age of 59. She joins her parents, Agustina “Norma” (Balderas) and Luis Castillo, daughter Katherine, and several aunts and uncles that she loved dearly.
Born on May 27, 1961, in Corpus Christi, Janette was the second of three children and known for being bright, witty and curious. She graduated from W.B. Ray High School in 1979. While working as an accountant for Whataburger, Janette found that her calling was to help others, and began her career in social work with this in mind. For over 25 years she worked with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission before retiring as a supervisor in Lockhart. She briefly returned to work as a career counselor in Austin before returning to Corpus Christi in 2019.
Outside of work, Janette was a devout Catholic and volunteered her time with churches in the diocese of Corpus Christi. She was most notably a musician and youth group director at Mary Mother of the Church, but was also a longtime parishioner at Sts. Cyril and Methodious. Other hobbies she had included sewing, cooking, singing and playing guitar. Janette was a lifelong lover of folk and rock music, and eagerly learned the songs of Cat Stevens, Jim Croce and more to play during mass or just for fun.
Janette is survived by her daughter Kristen, sister Deborah “Deby” (J.R. DeAnda) Botello, and brother Joseph Castillo. Outside of immediate family, Janette is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends, many of whom she cared for as if they were her own children.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, November 18, at Funeraria Del Angel, 549 Cheyenne St., with visitation beginning at noon and a rosary starting at 12:45. Mass will be at 1:30 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, and internment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Many thanks go out to Francisco Acebo, M.D. and team for being Janette’s primary physician for nearly 30 years. Our deepest gratitude also goes to Ernest Flowers, Janette’s ex-husband, for caring for her in the last year of her life.
