Dad loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild reminiscing about his childhood and family memories. He had a passion for bar-b-cueing faitas, making banuelos, and homemade hot chili sauce. He also enjoyed doing woodworking projects, photography, and working on cars. One of his proudest moments in his life was becoming a naturalized US Citizen on September 30, 1988.
As a youth, he was raised in Mexico, earned 50 cents a day working in the fields and orange orchards. He cherished the freedom of being able to pursue his dreams. Education played an important role in his life and he valued it very much. He self-taught himself the english language and on his own initiative and determination, took several evening classes to better educate himself. He was a "whiz" at math.
"I consider myself a rich man whenever one of my children, grandchildren, or great granddaughter were recognized at work, school for any kind of achievements. My heart would be filled with joy, happiness, and great pride of their accomplishments." -Guadalupe P. Leal
He had always instilled to his children and grandchildren the importance of education. Three of his grandchildren have realized their dreams. Selina Ortiz-Futrell graduated from Our Lady of the Lake, San Antonio, TX Cum la de, with a degree in communications and received her masters; Anna Lisa Gonzalez graduated from the University of Texas in San Antonio, TX with a degree in Biology and Joe C. Trevino III graduated from Sam Houston University, Houston, TX majoring in Criminal Justice, Masters Degree. He was so proud of his great granddaughter, Mia Gonzalez, for having enlisted in the US Navy and serving our country.
He also took much pride in displaying to his family and friends the fruits of his labor, his homegrown oranges, grapefruits, and lemons. He also cherished his beloved family dog, Lobo, of 14 years.
Our father will be dearly missed and will remain in our hearts always.
