After graduating from Mary Carroll high school, Ernest joined the United States Air Force, where he served his country for four years. After his service he remained in the reserves, attended Del Mar College and joined the United States Postal Service, where he retired in 2015 after 46 years. He married Sylvia Portales Polzin (John) in 1968 and they had 2 daughters, Debra Portales and Vanessa Arredondo (Ernie).
Ernest was a hard worker and determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. He was a devout Catholic, praying the rosary daily. He was a parishioner of Most Precious Blood Catholic Church and attended mass faithfully until his body would not allow.
Ernest was most passionate about baseball and playing softball. He could be found on a softball field, either playing the game or umpiring the game.
Ernest was predeceased by his parents, Consuelo and Ranulfo Portales.
He is survived by his daughters, Debra and Vanessa, grand daughters Ashley Rodriguez ( Emmanuel), Isela Gomez (Joshua), Aracely Garcia, Analise Arredondo and Milla Arredondo, his Great grandson Emmanuel Rodriguez, Jr. with a great-granddaughter on the way, two sisters Yolanda Ybanez (Joe) and Minerva Garcia (Richard) along with nieces, nephews and many friends.
Visitation 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Funeraria Del Angel Everhart, 4901 Everhart Road, Corpus Christi, TX 78411 with Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, 3502 Saratoga Blvd., Corpus Christi, TX 78415 followed by Interment at 1:00 p.m. at Coastal Bend Veterans Cemetery.
