Ram Piari Puri passed away at the age of 96 on November 18, 2020 of natural causes in Corona Del Mar, California. She is survived by her four children - Arun (Urmil), Raman (Sudhakar), Anil (Sharon) and Rekha - ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
She was wife of the eldest son, Gopal Krishan, of the Devi Dass Puri family of Moga, India. After becoming a widow at the young age of 26, she built a career and worked for 35 years as a teacher and a high school principal in India and raised her children through grit and determination while fulfilling her responsibilities in a large Indian joint family. She retired in 1982 and moved to the US to be with her children. Fondly known as Mummiji, she was a continuing thread in the extended family, staying in close contact with all the relatives in India and abroad.
Mummiji was sought after by her extended family as well as by her large circle of friends for advice and guidance on matters of Indian traditions and culture. Her deep study of the Indian spiritual and religious literature and her command of Sankrit mantras was legendary, and she was an avid practitioner of havans and poojas.
While she was loved and admired by all the extended Puri family, her deep love for her children is what sustained her through the trials and tribulations of a hard life in India. She was an inspiration and role model for her children who loved and respected her, and her loss leaves an unfathomable void in our lives.
