Ho-Ping Lo was born near Nanchang, in China’s Jianxi province. He was the third of eleven brothers and sisters. Due to his father’s work, he lived in different parts of South China when he was growing up, including spending many years in China’s Sichuan province during the Japanese invasion. As soon as he came of age he volunteered to serve his country and joined the Chinese Navy.
He met his wife Shirley in Taiwan and they were married in 1959, and they had two sons, Michael and Richard. Ho-Ping eventually retired as a captain in the ROC Navy and pursued post-graduate studies at St. Johns University in New York. His scholastic career was interrupted when he ran afoul of the ROC government, which prompted him to leave Taiwan and immigrate with his family to Hawthorne, California in 1973. There he started a second career in the trust department at City National Bank, where he retired in 1991. He moved with Shirley to Leisure World at Laguna Woods a few years later and enjoyed their new life there. Shirley passed away in 2007.
Ho-Ping passed away on the morning of January 22. He was honest, forthright and did not let life’s adversities change who he was. May he rest in peace.
