Barbara was born in Newport Beach, California and lived in Riverside, California during her early schooling years. She graduated from both Bryant Elementary School and Poly High School in Riverside. During the summers, Barbara and her family would leave Riverside to stay in their beach house on the Balboa peninsula near the Balboa bay. Barbara raced her own boats in the Balboa bay during this time as a competitive junior sailor. She raced her small boats; a Snowbird and a Falcon in the bay and also crewed for other ocean racing sailors in larger vessels for the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. After finishing her junior sailing career, Barbara went to Stanford University and graduated with a degree in History. While at Stanford, she was on the sailing team. Barbara owned and built many boats during her lifetime. She competed in and won many major sailboat races such as the Ensenada Race, Swan Rolex Championship, Dickerson Series, Ahmanson Series, Long Beach Race Week, Sunkist Series and others.
Barbara had two children, Stuart John Colville and MaryAnn Colville. Stuart lived and practiced law for many years in Santa Barbara, California. MaryAnn Colville played professional tennis at one time and later coached tennis at the collegiate level. Barbara also found time to volunteer with the Junior League, Music Academy of the West, and the Art Center. She was a member of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club for many years until her recent passing.
She is preceded in death by her second husband, William T. Colville, her son, Stuart John Colville, and her parents, Stuart Albert Cundiff and Delphine Jean McClure Howell Cundiff. Barbara is survived by her husband, John O’Donnell and her daughter, MaryAnn Colville.
