It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vladimir Vasilenko at his home in Martintown on April 5, 2023 at the age of 59 years. Beloved husband of Olga Ostrovskaia and cherished father of Igor and Victor Vasilenko. Dear son of the late Fyodor Vasilenko and Nina Sartakova.
Vladimir was a man of science, and his love for nature and plants led him to dedicate his life to biology. He earned a PhD in plant physiology at the Moscow State University and went on to develop groundbreaking technology involving the use of near infra-red light in shelf-life preservation of freshly cut flowers and fresh produce, as well as for seed germination and plant growth stimulation. He was involved in several well-known projects such as NASA's Tomatosphere, and conducted research work in over 20 countries such as Germany, Chile, Brazil, Spain, Israel, and India. He also developed organic fertilizers and soil remediation solutions for a healthier planet.
Vladimir loved people. His cheerful, humble, and outgoing spirit positively impacted the lives of those who came to know him. His love for God and participation at church were the principal aspects of his life, and he gladly shared his faith with others. He loved to spend time with his wife and two boys, and always stayed in contact with his family and friends in eastern Europe, never hesitating to visit whenever given the opportunity. His hobbies included photography, fishing, swimming, music, and travel. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
