John Allen Gillooly passed away at home in Coral Springs at the age of 85. John was born July 15, 1936 in New Cumberland, WV to the late Patrick and Ruth Gillooly. He was predeceased by his loving wife RuthAnn of 51 years.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Kathleen (Brian) Schaffer of Allentown PA, John II (Wendy) Gillooly of Palm Harbor FL, and Marie (Jeff) Bruener of Clermont FL and his grandchildren, Amanda, Brianne, Tyler, Kayce, Trinity, Brooke and great-grandchild, Tanner.
John worked the majority of his career as a district manager for Sun Oil Company and owned and ran several businesses in South Florida, including a tank testing company, valet service, and convenience stores. Later in life, he pursued a career in real estate sales which he was active in up until the time of his death. In addition to all these endeavors, he was most proud of and cherished his early career as a high school history teacher, driver education instructor, and football coach in Ohio.
While known for his Irish traits (temper), John had a heart of gold. He would always help another good soul in need at a moment’s notice and he loved to pay it forward. He and the love of his life RuthAnn, were active volunteers in many organizations such as Relay for Life - Team Top Gun and the Coral Springs-Parkland Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). John was an accomplished long-distance runner having completed 16 Boston Marathons. He also was an avid University of Florida football fan – Go Gators!
Per John’s wishes, no funeral is to be held. The family suggests donations be made in John’s memory to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Parkland, Coral Springs, Margate, and Coconut Creek.
