Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Mary (Wilson) Mason and father Joseph Mason. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Becky, and four sons – Robert H. McDonald, Jr. of Laredo, William H. (Willy) McDonald and friend, Cheryl Haynes, of Lampasas, Robin H. McDonald and wife, Kim, of Bastrop and Darrell D. McDonald and wife, Livia, of Laredo – one “adopted” sister, Joy Kovar of Hutto, and two “adopted” daughters, Mary Derrick of Copperas Cove and Patti Thomas of Kempner. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Ashley, Amanda and Dorianne, one grandson, Dylan, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Bob served in the United States Army for 22 years, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 2. He was a Korean War and Vietnam Veteran, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and an investigator with the Army Criminal Investigation Division. He received many medals, including the Bronze Star.
Following his military career, Bob received a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the American Technological University and served as Chief of Police in Copperas Cove where he was a graduate of the 110th session of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy, Washington, D.C. He also served as director of the Central Texas Regional Police Academy and taught criminal justice at Central Texas College. He owned and operated a private investigations business in Copperas Cove for many years, before his life-long passion for horses led to enjoyment of ranching after retirement.
Bob was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Copperas Cove, serving on numerous committees. He was a Mason for 57 years and was a member of the Mt. Hiram Lodge #595.
He served on the board of the Kempner Water Supply Corporation and was a member of the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce, serving as the Superintendent of the Youth Livestock Show.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 8-9 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church fellowship hall followed by Celebration-of-Life services in the sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. at Central Texas Veterans Cemetery at 11463 South Highway 95, Killeen, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Bob McDonald can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 101 West Ave F, Copperas Cove, Texas 76522.
