June of 1958, Oscar joined the U.S. Navy. He served in various aviation squadrons including VA65, VF41, and VT27, boarding naval carriers USS Nimitz (CVN-68) and USS Shangri-la (CVA-38).
On October 31, 1982, Master Chief Petty Officer Oscar Mayen retired after 26 years of distinguished service in the U.S. Navy. Oscar was presented with and authorized to wear the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Good Conduct Medal with gold star (6 awards).
Following military retirement, Oscar held the position of W/W Maintenance Superintendent, Dept of Public Utilities, for the City of Corpus Christi, TX. Oscar retired from city government after fifteen (15) years of service.
Oscar is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Irene Mayen; his son Michael Mayen and wife Sandy; his daughter Denyse Renee Ward and husband Quentin; and grandchildren Emily and John Ward. He is survived too by his brother Robert Mayen; his sisters Mary Vargas, Liz Schafer and her husband Steve, and Stella Mirabal as well as many relatives and friends by whom he will forever be missed. Oscar was preceded in death by his parents Oscar R. and Mary B. Mayen and his brothers Joe and Manuel Mayen.
He loved fishing, boating, gardening, photography and golf. His favorite pastime was listening to country music while barbequing for his family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion Post 618 in Willis, TX and the Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Oscar was modest, gentle and kind; a family man. He served his country with dignity and integrity and at the last his only concern was for those he was leaving behind. His quiet courage to the end was his final gift to those who loved him.
