Dorothy Faye McDaniel was born to George Washington and Esther Lee Sims in Dacus, Texas on January 9, 1934, and passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior on August 6, 2019, in her hometown of Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill McDaniel, her father and mother, sister Georgia and husband Jack Williams and brother William Ray and wife Glenda Sims.
Dorothy married Billy Ray McDaniel on March 6, 1953 and began her lifelong work as a loving wife, mother, pastor’s wife and school bus driver. She tells the story that she knew she would marry Bill when she first saw him, and she was instrumental in leading him to know Christ as his Savior. God blessed her with the gift of hospitality. Dorothy loved to sew and would cook a large meal for drop in visitors. She worked to help provide extra money for the family by taking a bus downtown for several years and then driving a school bus for 22 years for Aldine ISD. In all this she never missed one of the boy’s baseball games. The family never had a time without a family dog, even a few strays along the way. After her mom passed, Dorothy became the family matriarch and helped to hold the extended family together in the good times and bad times. She dutifully hosted the Sims family Christmas party for many years even after her health began to fail. She lived for that day and she did it in style. To any family member, Dorothy made it her business to know what was happening in the lives of each one of the family. She knew everybody’s birthdates and made sure everyone knew she was there to help. As a Christian servant and pastors’ wife, Dorothy played the piano, taught Sunday School, visited the sick, mentored the younger women and hosted evangelists during revivals.
Dorothy fondly remembered her childhood on the farm in Richards Texas with her family. At the age of twelve Dorothy was cooking meals for the entire family who worked in the fields. She moved to “the big city of Houston” when she was 15 years old. She graduated from Galena Park High School in 1952. She and Bill enjoyed traveling to the mountains and camping and she loved the game of baseball, instilling that love for the game in her two sons, Dale and Mark, at a very young age. She was a great neighbor who sought to be kind and helpful to everyone around her, and never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Those left to cherish her memory include, son Dale McDaniel; son Mark McDaniel and his wife Kim; grandchildren Brian McDaniel and his wife Tamara; Grace McDaniel; Tammy Yates and her husband Shawn; Pam White and her husband Josh; Robin Barnett and her husband Sam; Jamie Jones and her husband Kevin; sister Betty Groover and husband Walter; brother Duane Sims and wife Linda; 16 great grandchildren; and numerous loving in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A Visitation service will be held at Metcalf Funeral Home in Conroe Tx. on Sunday August 11, 2019 from 5-7pm. Funeral services will be Monday August 12, 2019 at 10am at Metcalf.
