Born May 7, 1924 in Ashe County, he was the son of the late Dewey Corbet Ham and “Laura” Ennis Clyde Church Ham. Roger retired from Bassett Upholstery and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Newton. Roger was married for 71 years to the love of his life, Virginia. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army, earning the EAME Service Medal with two bronze stars, as well as several other medals.
In addition to his parents, Roger is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Marie Howell Ham; three brothers, Freeman, James, and Roy; granddaughter, Catherine Marie Ham.
Roger is survived by his sister, Frances Wilcox of Ashe County; eight children, Roger Fredrick Ham Jr. and wife, Doris of Claremont, Virginia Dare Hinkley of Catawba, Katherine Wilson and husband, Donny of Maiden, Vivian Gilliam and husband, Gary of Bethlehem, Cindy Ham of Balls Creek, Allen Ray Ham and wife, Teressa of Newton, Jonnie Watts and husband, Leonard of Winter Haven, FL, Carla Simmons and husband, Brent of Lawndale. Roger and Virginia were also blessed with 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A private service will be held for the family. Receiving of friends will take place at Drum Funeral Home in Conover on Tuesday, March 17 at 3:00 pm.
