Born June 15, 1933 in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late Lester Boston and Maude Beakley Boston. Other than her family, Mavis’ greatest joy was her involvement in her church and her career as an educator. Mavis was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Newton, NC, where she was an elder, member of the choir, Presbyterian Women, and where she had helped start the Love-N-Care Child Development Center many years ago.
Mavis was an educator for over 35 years including 26 years as principal of South Newton Elementary School in Newton, NC. She was the second female principal and during her career received the Principal of the Year Award for Newton-Conover City Schools. Mavis was known at South Newton Elementary School for her youth chorus group and her yearly Halloween Carnival, which was attended each year by her students and students from other local schools.
She was a member of the Gamma Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, serving in numerous leadership capacities in furthering educational pursuits for teachers. Mavis received the 2015 Red Blazer Award, given by Newton-Conover City Schools for outstanding service, dedication and contribution to the school system. She was also a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, local garden club, and was a former member and treasurer of the Western Piedmont Symphony.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Keith Boston and Ray Boston; and sisters, Maxine Rice and Faye Boston.
She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, G. Richard Hedrick; daughter, Heidi Jonas and husband, Eddie of Newton, NC; brother, Edward Boston and wife, Frankie of Naples, FL; sister, JoAnn Adkins and husband, Bill of Hickory, NC; granddaughter, Ericka Krueger and husband, Brian; great-granddaughter, Emmy Krueger; numerous nieces and nephews.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church in Newton with Rev. Steven Barnes officiating.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
A private graveside service for the family will be held at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, NC.
