A native of Cherokee, Oklahoma, she was born May 21, 1923 to Roy W. and Lura Jarnigan Miller. In 1941, Virginia graduated from Lambert High School in Lampert, Oklahoma and continued her education at Enid Business College in Enid, Oklahoma. Following her employment at Squib Company in San Francisco, California, she moved to Connersville in 1942. Virginia worked at American Central during WW II and later was employed at Stant Manufacturing. She owned and operated the First Street Market for several years and then opened H & R Block with her daughter. Virginia was a member of the Baptist Church in Cherokee, Oklahoma and was a dedicated member of the American Legion, Post 1 Auxiliary. For over 28 years, Virginia served as the secretary and bookkeeper of the American Legion, retiring in 2012.
Virginia is survived by two children: Dale E. Jones of Connersville; Sondra K. Bennington and Rick of southern Wayne County; a daughter-in-law: Betty Jones Taylor of Lapel; grandchildren and their spouses: Dr. Jennifer Jones Byers and Dr. Scott Byers of Carmel; Kevin Sayers and Sarah of Fishers; Jason Jones; Jamie Jones, both of Indianapolis; Shelley Sayers Austin and Micah of Round Lake, Illinois; Adam Taylor of Lapel; Virginia “Jenny” Mays and Bill of Connersville; Bill L. Jones of Martinsville; several great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson and a niece.
In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by a son: Roy E. Jones, who died in 1979; a brother: Denzil Miller; and a grandson: Timothy Becraft.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Don Miller of the Bentonville Christian Church officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery. Friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
