Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home
Connersville native, Benjamin R. Johnson, 83, passed away Monday, January 23, 2023.
Ben was born on June 18, 1939, to Benjamin Franklin and Helen Riggs Johnson. He attended Connersville High School graduating in 1957. Ben furthered his education receiving his bachelor's degree in Political Science from Earlham College. Ben was the Vice President for National Metal, as well as the factory's top plastic mold designer. He was a pioneer in the plastic industry and was the original creator of a patented mold for plastic gas caps. Ben was mechanically inclined from a young age and had a passion for engines and cars throughout the duration of his life. His knowledge for antique cars had no bounds, as people all over the country would call and ask for his expertise. Ben was also an accomplished woodworker with much experience with various types of wood and trees. He was an avid fisherman, gardener, and bird lover. He enjoyed fishing for musky while canoeing on various rivers, and in his seventies made two trips down the Amazon. Ben was a conservationist and naturalist at heart, always wanting to preserve the environment around him, as well as his farm. He was also a member of The National Audubon Society. More than anything, Ben loved spending time with his grandson and family. Anyone who knew him well enjoyed his wit, intelligence, humor, and uniqueness. There was never a shortage of conversation with Ben. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Ben is survived by his son: Benjamin Q. Johnson; daughter: Ericka Johnson and her husband Mark Enneking; grandson: Clayton McKinley; the mother of his children: Cheryl Johnson; his sister: Jill Mackenzie; two nephews: Chris McGary and Joe Mackenzie.
In addition to his parents, Ben was preceded in death by his sister: Judy McGary.

Friends may visit at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m., until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to The National Audubon Society in Ben’ s Honor.
