Stephen was born in New York City to his parents Edward and Mary Peters. He was an adventurous young man with a passion for travel. He had heard that you could see the world as a Marine. When he was just 16, Stephen decided he wanted to join the Marines so he used his older brother's ID to enlist. He served in the Marines from 1947 through 1951. One of the defining experiences of Stephen's life was his service in the Korean War, including his engagement on the ground in the Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin Campaign. He later became a member of the exclusive fraternity of honor, "The Chosin Few " a select group of veterans who participated in the infamous battle at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea.
Following his military service, Stephen returned to New York City, where he married Catherine to start a family. He joined the NYPD. He protected and served the city of NY for 26 years retiring as a Sergeant.
After his NYPD service he went for training in Glynco, GA at the FLETC for the Department of Treasury. After the extensive training he became a Police Officer for the United States Mint at West Point until his retirement from service completely.
Stephen was predeceased by his parents Edward & Mary, his wife Catherine, his brother Edward and great-grandson Lochlan.
He is survived by his brother Francis, his daughter Mary (Brian) Marley, his sons Stephen (Theresa) Peters, Daniel (Maria) Peters and Edward (Stephanie)Peters. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren: (Brian Dowd, Stephen Dowd, Sarah Ruggiero, Kelly Peters, Stephen Peters , Sean Peters, Michael Peters, Daniel Peters, Edward Peters, Antoinette Abrahamsen, Kristin Brulatour and Jenny Emanuele), and his 10 great-grandchildren: (Declan, Connor, Daniel, Gracie, Roman, Ella, Gavin, Stella, Willow and Brooks).
The family of Stephen wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Meg Sullivan from Hospice of Rockland, Jasmine, Margaret and Manana.
Family will receive guests on Friday, April 23, 2021 from 4-8 at Michael J Higgins Funeral Home; 113 Lake Rd. East Congers, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Saturday, April 24th at St. Paul’s Church; 82 Lake Rd. Congers, NY. Interment to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Congers, NY.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Hospice of Rockland County, St. Jude Children's Hospital.
