Lillian J. Slattery of Congers, NY, 93 years old, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 21, 2024. She is survived by her children, Dennis Slattery [Julie], Mary Slattery Bennett [Larry-deceased], Louis Slattery, Joan Slattery Harten [Michael], Joseph Slattery [Sherri], Antonia Slattery Sambevski [Robert]. Lillian was predeceased by her husband Joseph, parents Maria and Louis Carfora and daughter Kathleen Slattery Whelan [Brian]. Lillian was blessed with 20 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Lillian was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY to Louis and Maria Carfora on August 23, 1931. She was married on May 5, 1951, at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn NY to Joseph Slattery. A dedicated wife and mother, Lillian was a model of service and sacrifice for her family. She not only quoted the ‘Golden Rule’ to her children, she lived it. Lillian set and lived an example of service to others by volunteering her time and talents to organizations including the Creedmore Hospital in Queens NY.
Lillian turned her time and talent to serving as a member of the St. Paul Mother’s Guild, volunteered in the school as well as served as GIrl Scout Leader and Den mother. She was active in her church as a member of the Altar and Rosary Society as well as in her community at the local volunteer ambulance society. Lillian never hesitated to use her many artistic talents and skills to add a little beauty to the world around her. Lillian and Joe instilled a love of learning and the importance of education in all of their children, and were often seen reading or working the NY Times Sunday crossword puzzle. Once her children were grown, Lillian returned to the workforce as a teaching assistant at the Strawtown Elementary school in West Nyack. She retired after 20 years, influencing not only her students but many of the teaching staff who grew to love and admire her. Lillian and Joe enjoyed traveling, venturing across the United States, cruising Alaska and traversing many European countries. Lillian continued to enjoy her love of travel with friends from the local senior citizen club. Lillian valued her friendships, most of which span over 60 years.
Visitation for Lillian will be held Friday, December 27, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 113 Lake Road East, Congers, NY. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 9:30 AM at St Paul's Catholic Church, 82 Lake Rd, Congers, NY. Interment will follow immediately at Gethsemane Cemetery located in Rockland Lake State Park, Congers NY.
