CONCORD – Natale “Nat” Linton Brown, 95, of Concord died December 9, 2011 at Havenwood/Heritage Heights. She was born in New Haven, CT in 1916, the daughter of Raymond A. Linton and Morley Sanborn Linton. She was raised in Brazil and later, resided in many different parts of the United States.
She graduated from The Thomas School, Smith College, and Yale University School of Nursing. In 1941, following her marriage to J. Willcox Brown, the couple lived in Cooperstown, NY; McCloud, CA, and Ann Arbor, MI before they decided to settle in Dunbarton, NH, in 1956.
Nat was a dedicated, lifelong volunteer, having served on numerous boards such as: The League of Women Voters; The Concord Community Mental Health Center (now, Riverbend); NH Association for the Blind; NH Child and Family Services;
The Child Welfare League of America; and the NH Council on World Affairs.
For 12 years, she was chairman of the Foreign Visitor Hospitality program, and also served on the National Board of COSERV (now, the National Council for International Visitors).
Among other organizations Nat actively participated with are: The Friends of New England College Library, The Advisory Council of the Currier Gallery of Art and Camp Mayhew in Bristol. In addition, she was chairman of the Committee for Acquisitions for the Bridges House and was appointed a consumer representative to the Electrical Energy Review Committee for the State of New Hampshire. For 45 years, Nat served as a trustee for the Robert Frost Farm in Derry.
In 2001, she and her husband, Willcox, were both honored with the Granite State Award by the University of New Hampshire for their outstanding service to the state.
Her interests extended to involvement with outdoor groups, environmental and historical preservation. Nat was a member of the NH Bird and Wildflower Club; the Appalachian Mountain Club, and was a volunteer at the Squam Lake Science Center. She was also a member of the NH Historical Society.
Nat enjoyed traveling with her husband and together they were members of the Partners of the Americas, which they served as volunteer liaisons between North and South America, They also attended the United Nations Conference of Habitat in Vancouver, BC, and the Water Conference in Argentina.
She was predeceased by her husband, Willcox, and their daughter, Susan. She is survived by her sister, Mary Brooks Linton of Mill Valley, CA; her children, Thompson Brown and his wife Kristina, of Petaluma, CA; Shasta and her husband, Jean-Denis Cruchet, of New Mexico and France; Stephen Brown and his wife, Kathleen Maturo Brown, of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the Concord Community Music School, 23 Wall Street, Concord.
Interment service will be held at the Brandywine Cemetery in Wilmington, DE, to celebrate the lives of Natale and Willcox at a later date.
