PEMBROKE - John Patrick Martin, 81, of Pembroke, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, August 14, 2014 at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester surrounded by his family.
John was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended Boston Schools.
He entered the United States Army during the Korean War. He was injured severely in battle while stationed overseas, necessitating him to remain in a Veterans hospital for a very lengthy period.
Following his time in the military, John went to college in Ohio earning himself a Doctorates’ Degree. He worked for many years as a Substance Abuse Counselor in various halfway houses in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Florida and California.
John was predeceased by a brother, Robert Martin.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Susan L. Heger of Pembroke; a son, Scott Martin of MA; a daughter, Laura Martin and her husband Matt Runyon of NJ; 2 step sons, Mark Heger and his wife Christine of Goffstown and Todd Heger and his wife Amanda of Concord and nine grandchildren. John was also a friend of Bill’s.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm on Sunday, August 17 at Bennett Funeral Home, 3 Church Street, Concord. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 18 at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral Home on 3 Church Street. The committal with military honors will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 150 Cambridge Park Drive, Suite 202, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02140.
