He was born in Rochester, N.Y. on December 4, 1949 to George H. Pike and Lucille Gable Pike. His early years were spent in Rochester, Hudson, Geneseo and Jamestown, N.Y. As a young teenager, his family lived in Bolivia, where his father was principal at the International School in La Paz. That was a wonderful adventure for him. David graduated from Jamestown High School. He was an accomplished competitive swimmer, and he started his college studies at Kent State in Ohio on a swimming scholarship. He was considered an Olympic contender and his records stood for almost 20 years. He earned his Associate degree in Art and completed his Bachelor degree in Media Communications at State University of New York at Fredonia. He worked at the college for several years in TV production and community access TV. Photography had been a hobby from an early age and it developed into his lifelong profession. He worked for Leichtner Studio and Varden Studio in Rochester, N.Y. as a wedding and portrait photographer. On June 9, 1984, he married Clare Howard in Rochester and the following year, they moved to Concord, where he joined MacLean-Studios, Inc. as a portrait photographer. David and Clare welcomed the births of their sons, Kyle Cameron in 1987 and Jay Collin in 1990. He loved his boys fiercely and unconditionally, even when they all took turns pushing each other's buttons.
His work included senior, family and business portraits, sports action, large group and candid photography. He easily moved into the digital age and became skilled with the technology that became part of his field. MacLean-Stevens transitioned into Lifetouch National School Studios, and he retired in 2015. His photography work touched so many lives over the years and he took great pride in capturing the best image. He valued the wonderful friendships formed with fellow photographers and they stuck by his side through his illness.
David enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Over the years, he enjoyed sailing and biking and was a terrific cook. He loved being outdoors, most often with a camera slung over his shoulder. He will be remembered for his incredible intelligence, curiosity in all things, his boundless energy, his truly unique sense of humor and his wonderful creativity.
David was predeceased by his parents. His family includes his wife Clare Howard-Pike and sons, Kyle and his girlfriend Kathleen Murphy of Durango, Colorado and Jay, of Concord. He also leaves behind two sisters, Jacquelynn Ann Green and husband Robert of Streetsboro, Ohio and Dulce Jo Ann Pike of Amsterdam, Holland and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, February 4th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home in Concord. A private family celebration will take place in the summer on Chautauqua Lake in New York.
Donations may be made in his memory to Concord Regional VNA, The Slusser Center, Development Office, 30 Pillsbury Street, Concord, N.H. 03301.
