Winifred B. Dodrill, age 89, a long-time Upper Arlington resident, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, OH. Winifred was born March 1, 1922 in Bloomdale, Wood County, OH and graduated as high school valedictorian. She met her future husband of 65 years, Donald L. Dodrill, at the Marion Business College. Following his return from Army military service during WWII, they were married June 6, 1946 in Columbus, OH. Winifred spent her professional career as a business woman. From 1954-1999 she was a business partner with her husband at Dodrill Design, a Columbus commercial art studio. Winifred was also director of Windon Art Gallery (1982-1995). Winifred was a dedicated patron of the arts and provided strong support and encouragement to women artists and others in the field. She was always willing to help others and was a friend to many. Winifred was a proficient writer and editor. As a volunteer she wrote articles for a variety of art organizations including the Ohio, Bexley, and Columbus Art Leagues, and the Central Ohio, Ohio, Pennsylvania, National, and American Watercolor Societies. She collaborated with her husband in writing a book on watercolor painting entitled The Transparent Touch. She was a past member of Zonta International, a professional women’s business organization, and was involved in the early restoration activities in German Village. She was an avid reader with a wide range of subject interests. She instilled in her children and grandchildren an appreciation of education, particularly the arts, literature and history. She had the highest academic and professional standards and was respected by her children as a mentor and teacher of life’s lessons. Winifred’s life was a testament to the power of the mind and personal inner faith that prevailed long over physical disability. We are grateful for her inspiration, her abiding love and for the gift of her courageous spirit. She “shall mount up with wings as eagles; she shall run, and not be weary; and she shall walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31). Her journey has not ended. It has only just begun. Winifred B. Dodrill is survived by her husband, Donald; sister, Mrs. Raymond (Phyllis) Farrell; beloved daughter, Dena Gianas; sons, Davan and Jon W. Dodrill; and loving grandchildren, Regan and Linsey Gianas, Jon R., Sara, Teal, Jennifer and James Dodrill, Andrew Hall and Matt Brillhart. Winifred was preceded in death by parents, Anna Louise Warner and William Scott Barnhisel; brother, Bud Barnhisel; sisters, Mrs. Norman (Elnore) Marsh and Mrs. Steven (Madge) Horvath; and granddaughter, Fara Danielle Gianas.
