Dr. William D. Miely passed away peacefully on Monday, May 2, 2022 at the age of 97. He was born September 28, 1924 in Youngstown, Ohio where he was raised by his mother Dora (Fortunato) and father Dominic. After Dominic’s passing early in life, Bill received much love and guidance from his uncle Nick Fortunato. Bill was the second youngest of seven siblings. After attending Youngstown East High, he served two years in the United States Navy and went on to complete his undergraduate degree at the Ohio State University, using his G.I.Bill. During this time, he met his loving wife of many years, Mary Jo. He earned his post-graduate degree from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry as a member of the first Oral Surgery residency program at White Cross Hospital. Bill built a successful oral surgery practice in Columbus where he was on staff at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital for over 40 years. Together, Bill and Mary Jo raised 5 children. Bill’s family and friends were his greatest joy. He was an avid golfer, an impeccable gardener, a member of the Upper Arlington Rotary, the Upper Arlington Booster Club, the Ohio Dental Association, Scioto Country Club and St. Andrew’s Parish. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Jo (Sherrard); parents Dominic and Dora (Fortunato) Miely; brothers, Robert and Felix Miely; sisters, Marguerite Wilhelm, Helen Delfrano, Ann Smith, Jean Beraduce; and grandson Sam Luffey. He is survived by sons, Mike Miely (Betsy), Stephen Miely (Joanne), Bill Miely (Linda), Mark Miely (Molly), and daughter Lynn Luffey (Ed); grandchildren, Kelly Miely (John Stone), Megan Daughters (Doug), Lesley Ann Miely, Berkley Miely (Dana Seeholzer), Nicholas Miely, Jessica Joseph (Mac), Shawn Miely (Meg), Sara Patton (Brett), Jayne Miely (Jon Corbett), Matthew Miely, and Will Luffey; great grandchildren, George Owen Stone; Tommy, Abby, and Charlie Daughters; Ava Miely, Camryn Miely, Charlotte Joseph; Penelope and John William Miely; Morgan, Hayden, and Jordan Patton. The family will receive friends at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1899 McCoy Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio on Friday, May 13, 2022 from 10 a.m.- 11 a.m., with a funeral mass immediately following at 11 a.m. A reception will be from 1 - 3 pm.
