William J. Flaherty (Bill), age 71, passed away at his home in Upper Arlington on Sunday, July 12, 2020 surrounded by family. Bill grew up in Kearny, NJ, attended Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, NJ and graduated from Kings College in Wilkes Barre, PA. Bill and his loving wife Cindy met as VISTA volunteers in Pittsburgh in 1970 and married in Natick, MA in 1974. They raised their family in Upper Arlington, OH.
Bill served in senior executive positions at the Peace Corps, the Ohio Departments of Liquor Control and Administrative Services, the Corporation for Supportive Housing (Ohio) and Franklin County. As a dedicated public servant, he led many teams that impacted public policy in areas of increasing diversity, social services, the environment and other areas. He ensured that building projects including the renovation of the Statehouse, the Franklin County Courthouse and Huntington Park were completed on or under budget, serving generations to come. He was a trusted advisor, role model and friend to many.
Bill valued his faith, family and friends. His favorite advice to his children was “Try hard, have fun, and do your best!” - the order of which is currently disputed by his three sons - who live by and pass on this lesson to their children. One of his greatest joys was spending family vacations at Cape Cod and the Jersey Shore.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Beatrice and his sister, Kathleen Shugg. He is survived by his loving wife, Cindy; sons, Peter A. (Jaime), David K. (Rebeca), William J. (Amanda); grandchildren, Maya, Cynthia and Julia; sisters Beatrice DiNapoli and Jean Flaherty; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Bill instilled in his children the importance of philanthropy. Please consider making a donation in Bill’s memory, in lieu of flowers, to Operation Smile www.operationsmile.org , St. Thomas More Newman Center www.buckeyecatholic.com, or the James Cancer Hospital www.cancer.osu.edu .
