Thomas Hoover Van Kirk, age 81, of New Albany, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2020 at home and surrounded by his devoted partner in life, Jean Smythe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mary Van Kirk; brother, Stewart Van Kirk and aunt, Elizabeth Hoover. Tom is survived by his partner, Jean Smythe; daughter, Elizabeth Van Kirk; nephew Stewart Van Kirk, Jr. (Elena); sister-in-law, Pam Van Kirk and great-nephew, Jason Van Kirk.
Tom was an alum of the class of 1957 at the Columbus Academy. He attended The Ohio University and graduated from Franklin University, earning degrees in Electronic Engineering Technology, Business Administration and EA Counseling. After serving in the Air Force, he became an avionics staff officer in the National Guard Bureau and rose to the rank of captain. During his service he was awarded the USAF Commendation Medal. After his military service, Tom proceeded to have a long career in counseling, obtaining various licenses and serving as a Counselor of Clinical Supervision. He enjoyed professionally working to help others in drug and alcohol recovery programs and was personally active for 35 years in the recovery community, where he served as an Area Archivist.
Tom will always be remembered for his willingness to help others and his saying "just don't take the first one!" In his retirement, he enjoyed doing extensive research into the history of WWII and visiting any hobby shop he came across. And rest assured, he would never pass up the opportunity for a good conversation!
There will be a visitation from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 25th at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST, 1051 East Johnstown Road, Gahanna. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM.
