Roy graduated from Mooreland High School in 1955 and was class president for four years. He then attended college at Panhandle AandM in Goodwell, Oklahoma for two years, then transferred to Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma to continue his undergraduate studies and was involved in ROTC. In 1960, Roy graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture education. After graduation, Roy moved to Washington D.C. and entered active duty in the United States Army. In 1960 Roy met the love of his life, Agnes Hiatt and they were married in 1962.
Later in 1962 Roy was sent to South Korea to serve in the United Nations Military Advisory Group, Eighth U.S Army Command.
In 1965, Roy received a Master of Science degree in agricultural education from Oklahoma State University. Roy taught vocational agriculture and served as FFA advisor in Lamont, Oklahoma for three years. In 1968, he was recruited as an information acquisition specialist in the national ERIC Clearinghouse on Vocational-Technical Education, a project of the National Center for Research on Vocational Education at The Ohio State University.
Roy completed graduation requirements and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1974 from The Ohio State University and then served as an information specialist, senior research specialist and graduate school professor. He is the author of many published and proprietary private sector articles and books. He retired in 1988 and the Ohio State Board of Trustees appointed him as an Emeritus Senior Research Specialist.
Roy and his wife, Agnes have been longtime members of Riverside United Methodist Church. Roy enjoyed woodworking, yard work, gardening, reading, and writing.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his grandson, Collin Todd.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 59 years, Agnes (Hiatt); children, Martin (Kate) Butler; Jason (Kendra) Butler; and Aerica (Kevin) Foos; grandchildren Martin, David, Sarah, Kira, Caleb Butler, Curtis, Courtney, and Colton Phillips, Nathan, and Abigail Foos; great grandchildren Gage, Elsie, Myla, Owen, Carson, and Sophia.
Family will receive friends 1-3 PM on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221, where a Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, November 1, 2021.
