The Honorable Robert N. Smith, M.D., who lived his life of Duty, Honor and Country, died Wednesday, January 22, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Amy and Robert Smith; brothers, Drs. Barton and Charles Smith and first wife, Marilyn. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, grew up in Swanton, Ohio and led a life of excellence and achievement. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point; was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force where he served as pilot and engineering project officer. He received his Masters Degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Medical Degree from The University of Nebraska. He was a Board Certified Anesthesiologist and practiced over 30 years at Toledo Hospital. Dr. Smith was nominated by President Gerald Ford and confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. He developed policy and supervised worldwide military health care delivery systems. He served on federal boards, committees and councils. His memberships include: The Ohio State Medical Association President (1969-1970); American Medical Association; American Society of Anesthesiologists; Past President, Academy of Medicine Toledo and Lucas County; Toledo Rotary and numerous medical, civic and political organizations. He received a Resolution of Commendation from the American Medical Association; Distinguished service citation from The Ohio State Medical Association; Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service as Assistant Secretary of Defense and numerous honorary awards. Robert is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Joan; children, Sandralyn Seidel, AZ; Sharon Coffin, Toledo, OH; Marilyn (Rudolf) Kahle, Solon, OH; Marcia (Mike) Makings, AZ ; Elizabeth (William) Ferguson, AZ and Robert (Linda) Smith, CA; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many special friends. Heartfelt thanks to Griswold Home Care and the remarkable and dedicated caregivers who made it possible for Dr. Smith to remain home. A Time of Shared Memories will be held 1-5 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, for those who wish to attend.
