Lorraine lived a remarkably full, productive and meaningful life. Of French Canadian ancestry, she was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts on August 28, 1919. She and her family were members of the Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and she graduated from Marblehead High School. After high school she worked as a professional tap dancer and telephone operator. She enlisted and served in the United States Women's Army Corps specializing in communications. During World War II, she was an aircraft dispatcher for the 8th Air Force Headquartered in High Wycombe, England. She worked in direct support of General James Harold "Jimmy" Doolittle. It was during this time that Lorraine met Matthew Edward Harty Jr., an American glider pilot. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grantham, England on March 6, 1945. On returning to the U.S., they established their home of many years in rural Poland, Ohio. Family and community life for Lorraine was rich and fulfilling. She loved being with family and friends, searching for antique treasures, warm beaches, new adventures, and enjoyed the illustrator Tasha Tudor and author Leo Buscaglia. Her travel abroad extended to England, Ireland, Ghana, Togo, Italy, France, Fiji, Western Samoa, and New Zealand. She worked with the Youngstown YMCA and Camp Fitch, at the Poland Library, and with New York Life Insurance as the first woman agent in Youngstown. She was a founding member of the Holy Family Church (Poland), served on the Camp Fitch Board, was a member of AMVETS and the Arms Historical Society (Youngstown), and volunteered with the American Red Cross and the Worthington Historical Society.
