John Clarke Belland, 71, of Columbus, OH, passed away on Thursday, November 26, 2009, at The Ohio State University Medical Center after a long struggle with several health conditions. He was born in Chicago, IL on November 12, 1938. John was married in 1967 to Elizabeth Ann Miller. He obtained a B. A. in mathematics from Northwestern University. After teaching high school mathematics, John received an M.S. in education from Northern Illinois University. He then obtained a Ph. D. in education in 1969 from Syracuse University. In 1970 John obtained a faculty position in the School of Educational Policy and Leadership at The Ohio State University, where he remained until his retirement in 1995 as Professor Emeritus. A multi-talented Eagle Scout, John Belland enjoyed living life. He maintained a positive attitude in the face of many health challenges and boldly continued to enjoy his many artistic endeavors. Even while on a portable oxygen machine, John enjoyed the camaraderie of playing the clarinet in the Worthington Civic Band. An accomplished pianist, John cherished the process of making music and the education of young musicians. Always the educationally focused socialite, John enjoyed his bi-weekly lunches with the O.S.U. R.O.M.E.O.s (Retired Old Men Eating Out).
