Daniel “Ken” Owens died Monday, March 23, 2009 at Berger Hospital. He was born November 10, 1932 in North Carolina and received degrees in biochemistry from North Carolina State University. He worked at the North Carolina State Laboratory of Hygiene and then spent 28 years in research with DuPont until retirement in 1985.
He held many US and foreign patents and was the author of more than 40 scientific and technical publications and one book. He served as a Trustee of the Ted Lewis Museum, a Trustee of the Presbyterian Church, a Director of Scioto Valley Habitat for Humanity, and on the Circleville City Board of Education.
He was a member of Sigma Xi Honorary Research Society, the South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Societies, the American Numismatic Association and the Antique Wireless Association.He was an associate editor of the Journal of the Antique Wireless Association and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists.
He was an organizing member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Richmond, VA and Cross and Crown Lutheran Church in Florence, SC, serving on the Councils and building committees of both churches.
He was a trained musician and served as organist in Cross and Crown Lutheran Church in Florence, SC. He composed many choral anthems and sang in church choirs for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pat; his children, Lynn (David) Lewis of Fredricksburg, VA, David (Terri) Owens of Charleston, SC and Karen (Mark) Stanfill of Red Oak, TX; and grandchildren Daniel Lewis, Jacob and Sam Owens, and Ellen and Benjamin Stanfill.
A memorial service will be held at 1PM on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at The Presbyterian Church, 134 East Mound Street, Circleville, Ohio.
