Catherine McDermott Stevenson

Catherine McDermott Stevenson, age 67, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Born on November 30, 1945 in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late James and Agnes McDermott, she married the late John. L. Stevenson in 1986. She is survived by stepchildren: J. Mark Stevenson (Wendy) and Candace J. Usher (David), granddaughters: Susan P. Stevenson and Samantha S. Usher. “Aunt Cathy” is also survived by 16 nieces/nephews, 32 grand nieces/nephews, and 6 great grand nieces/nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Marion Majestic and Jean Carver, brothers James and John McDermott, and nephew, Christopher McDermott.

Family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 N. High St., Worthington, OH where a Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Private inurnment to be held at Union Cemetery. Catherine was a graduate of St. Paul Cathedral High School and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She worked in banking, sales, and was employed by the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh before marrying John L. Stevenson and relocating to Worthington, OH.

During their quarter century together, Cathy was able to do one of her favorite things… Spoil John rotten. Cathy loved to cook and used her cooking skills much to his delight. She also held glorious holiday extravaganzas of food for the Stevensons, Ushers, and sometimes friends and extended family. She loved to cook, read about cooking, watch shows about cooking, try new dishes, and talk about cooking.

But cooking was not her favorite topic. Her favorite topic was talking about her grandchildren and her many grand nieces/nephews. One could not talk to Cathy for long without hearing about the latest achievements of a child of the greater McDermott or Stevenson clans.

Later in life, she found her dream job at the Northwest Worthington Public Library. She loved people and she loved books. The library gave her the opportunity to bring books and people together. She always brought with her, library books, books on tape, and videos when traveling or visiting her grandchildren. She was so excited about the 2007 Library of the Year award. Cathy felt that her relationships with coworkers and patrons truly enriched her life, and she tried, in turn, to enrich theirs.

Catherine touched the lives of many. Tears have been shed by her neighbors, her friends, and her family. Cancer took her too soon.
