My condolences to your family.  I knew Alma as a customer at the bank where I worked.  As we encountered each other frequently, we discovered that she worked with my aunt at OSU in the nutrition field.  My most lasting memory of Alma was when I ventured to the Asian festival and she served me a large plate of Philippino home made food, and introduced me to her family and friends.  She was a wonderful ambassador for the Philippino culture and cuisine.  I was always struck by her warm manor and generosity.

Alma Montano Saddam was my godmother. A godmother is a person chosen by the parents to serve as a mentor and authorized to claim legal guardianship of their child should anything befall them. The fact that my parents chose Tita Alma in this role is testament to how they held her in very high esteem. Alma, for her part, was a very gracious and generous godmother, modeling for me what it meant to be a fiercely independent, adventurous, and courageously outspoken woman in this world. Her wit was as bright as the glint in her eyes, and her laughter as big as her heart. I was the flower girl at the wedding of her sister Aida and forgot to toss the flowers along the church aisle on the way to the altar. Alma saved me from being scolded by insisting that the wedding party photographs after the ceremony would be much better with the flower girl holding a basket full of flowers. I remember her at family gatherings as the effortlessly glamorous auntie who could tell stories that made everyone laugh heartily but who would also take the time to sit with me to ask how I was and listen intently to whatever quietly awkward thing I had to say. Over the years she always sent a Christmas card with a summary of her travels, her accomplishments, and personal highlights. I remember these as a kind of “Alma-knack” and they somehow made me feel connected to her despite the distance and the time that separated us. The last time I saw Alma was at the wake of my own father last year (spring 2022), and I recall how her reassurances and the sheer vitality of her presence was of great comfort during that difficult time. She was a beautiful force of Nature and I feel privileged to have known her. Rest in peace, Dear Alma.

Alma took my grandson, Nick;  granddaughter, Ava; and me to lunch at the Faculty Club. Nick and Ava were starting college at OSU and were very appreciative of Alma’s generosity and kindness. 

Alma and me were graduates of the University of the Philippines. 

I am proud to be Alma’s friend and will always remember her.

Dr. Saddam (Alma) was an extraordinary member of our nutrition community who was loved by students and faculty colleagues alike.  Many of us in Human Nutrition as well as Human Sciences have exceptionally fond memories of her from her pre-retirement days.   Her dedication, smiles, and ethusiasm will be greatly missed.

   We are so lucky to have had the privilege of exchanging correspondence with her for so many years as she chronicled her travels and the wonderful events in her life, especially watching her beloved Buckeye.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Alma.  We were OSU colleagues for many years.  My condolences to the family.

I was very sorry to learn the news of Alma's death.  She was such an inspiring person - very intelligent, always helpful, and filled with tremendous good humor and joyous wit.  She was a great colleague and friend who brought a lot of fun to the Extension conferences, Parade of Homes outings, and study tours we took part in over the years.  She  made a positive difference and will be greatly missed.  Deepest sympathy to the rest of her friends and family.

Alma was our long time volunteer and member at the Upper Arlington Senior Center. She taught her Staying Well Nutrition series  for many years and worked out in our fitness room with her "regulars". There are no words to express our sorrow. Please know that we are thinking of her family.
