With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kenneth Eugene (Gene) Ferguson on April 14, 2025. Gene was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. His quiet and kind spirit touched countless lives and he always had a smile for everyone he met.
Gene was born in Dayton, Ohio to James and Maggie Ferguson on December 7, 1937. He was proud to have grown up in a large family with nine brothers and sisters.
Gene graduated from Patterson Co-op in Dayton, Ohio in 1957. He lived and worked in Dayton until he was transferred with Reliance Electric Company to Columbus, Indiana in 1961. He remained with Reliance Electric as the Human Resources director until his retirement in 2000.
Before and after retirement Gene was an avid sports enthusiast. He played basketball and tennis in his younger years, was a life long fisherman, and became quite the golfer later in life. He enjoyed playing golf weekly with friends at Timbergate and looked forward to their annual golf trips to Arizona. Gene passed down that love to his grandchildren, often taking them to fish or hit golf balls during any visit.
Gene was a thirty plus year volunteer for Our Hospice of South Central Indiana and this is where he met his wife, Joanne, of twenty nine years. Gene was also a member of Westside Community Church and took pride in assisting with the growth and fundraisers for its current location.
Gene's love for his family never wavered. He will be remembered for his patience, gentle spirit, and above all kindness toward his wife, daughters, and grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughter, Angie (Geoff) Curtis; Joanne's daughters, Lisa (Calvin) Reck, and Tammy (Brent) Pedigo; his grandchildren, Alex Wittich, Kelsey (Brian) Super, Johnny Wittich, Sam, Max, and Henry Curtis; along with great grandchildren, Jack, Daisy, Elliott, and Max. He is also survived by his siblings, Royce, Lynne, Donna, Beverly, and their spouses.
Gene was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Tami, and her husband John Wittich; his parents, Maggie and James Ferguson; and five brothers, Ellis, Sam, Wib, Ralph, and Paul Ferguson.
In keeping with Gene's life long love of all things ice cream, a Celebration of Life will take place at Zaharako's in Columbus Indiana on Sunday, June 1, 2025 from 2-4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the Goldie Gibson Head Start Scholarship Fund, care of the Heritage Fund, 538 Franklin Street, Columbus, IN 47201.
