Mr. Rachels retired from the Columbus Fire Department, and owned and operated, with his brother-in-law, Lonnie E. Daffin, D&R Grocery Store for more than thirty years.
Other than his parents, Mr. Rachels was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Daffin Rachels, three sisters; Emmie Rachels, Necel Rachels Chesser, Katie Bell Rachels Harris, five brothers; B.S. Rachels, Danny Rachels, James Rachels, Senthy Carlese Rachels, and Joseph Robbins.
Survivors include his daughter, Dorothy Rachels Belvin of Columbus; a son, Talmadge Ray(Judy)Rachels, Jr. of Huntington Beach, CA; one sister, Hazel Robbins Jones of Columbus; five grandchildren, F. Eric Belvin of Lakeland, FL, Rachel(Patrick)Peters of Dayton, OH, Talmadge Scott(Julie)Rachels of Irvine, CA, Lance(Brenda)Rachels of Westlake Village, CA, and Heather(Caleb)Clements of Costa Mesa, CA; ten great-grandchildren, Conor Belvin of Lakeland, FL, Paul and Annelise Peters of Dayton, OH, Madison, Lauren and Kathryn Evelyn Rachels of Irvine, CA, Luke and Joshua Rachels of Westlake Village, CA, and Emily and Charlie Clements of Costa Mesa, CA.
Funeral services for Mr. Rachels will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at North Highland Assembly of God with Reverends Talmadge Ray Rachels, Jr. and Dennis Lacy officiating. Interment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus.
