Kathryn "Kit" Louise Rice Brabson, age 92, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2021, surrounded by loving family. She was the wife of Max L. Brabson, Sr., and mother of Mary Kathryn Brabson and Max L. Brabson, Jr.
She was known as a caring and kind southern lady. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Kit was born January 27, 1928, the third daughter of Daisy Chambliss and Kanan K. Rice, in Macon, Georgia. She grew up in Macon and graduated from Miller High School in May 1945. She followed her two older sisters and enrolled at Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, where she earned a degree in Social Services. She was a life-long fan and supporter of the college.
Following graduation, Kit moved to Columbus, Georgia where she worked with the Child Welfare Division. In her role, she was responsible for the care of infants as they were placed into adoption or foster homes. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Max. Kit was devoted to her support of Max during his long health care career and was a key to his success.
Kit’s world revolved around her family. She proudly, protectively, and lovingly cared for her family as a full-time wife and mother. Kit was a loving and doting grandmother of her grandchildren, Christopher and Lauren, who have fond memories of playing card games, swimming, and seeing the sites during their frequent visits with their grandparents. She loyally attended their sporting, music, Scout, and school activities, and was their biggest fan.
Kit was a dedicated member of each community where she lived. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Columbus and the Joy Sunday School Class. She served as a Girl Scout leader, hospital volunteer, and in numerous other civic programs. Kit loved to play bridge and established many strong and life-long friendships with her bridge group. She was an avid learner and an active member of the Adelphian Study Club of Columbus.
Kit was predeceased by her parents, Kanan and Daisy; her husband, Max; and her sisters, Martyna Rice Wagner and Frances Rice Roberts.
She is survived by her two children, Mary Kathryn Brabson and Max L. Brabson, Jr., his wife Sue; two grandchildren, Christopher Miller Brabson (Jenna) and Lauren Elisabeth Ferriter (Paddy); three great-grandchildren, and her dear niece, Jan Roberts (Doug).
The family wants to express their sincere appreciation for the dedicated and loving care provided by the staff at Spring Harbor Retirement Community and her personal aides from Rescare Homecare.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 Thursday, January 14th at Parkhill Cemetery with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. COVID protocol will be observed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to First Baptist Church, Columbus, Georgia.
