John or "Tim" (as he was affectionately known to family and friends) was born in Atlanta, Georgia on February 29, 1940, the son of Orell A. Dunlap and Louise Timlin Dunlap Dixon. Yes, he was a Leap-Year baby!
He grew up in Atlanta and Miami, and graduated from Woodward Military Academy in Atlanta. He earned his B.A. (Mathematics and Philosophy), M.A. (Philosophy) and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.
Tim was a professor of philosophy and logic at Columbus College, now known as Columbus State University, and taught there for more than 30 years.
He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, and did work for NASA under the U.S. Air Force through Auburn University. He travelled extensively for work, including trips to other universities throughout the Far East, Europe and the United States. One highlight was a trip to China where he took a group of students from CSU.
He enjoyed sailing, working on cars and deep discussions on many subjects. He was especially proud of his Jaguar which he had refurbished from the ground up. Tim loved to travel for leisure and made many trips including to Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and The Bahamas.
Research of his genealogy was of deep interest to him, and he was regularly seeking more information.
Tim was a genuine friend. His friendships were long lasting and special. He treasured his friends and family and regularly kept in touch with them. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them.
Tim was also an animal lover. From the way he made friends with, and then adopted, his Belgian Malinois, Osa, out of a shelter, to their cat Ninja and hamster Paul (Tim’s ‘little buddy’) it was obvious he cared for all. He made a habit of pulling the car over to help turtles cross the road.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Richard Earl Dunlap, Sr.; his sister, O. Hope Dunlap Woods; and his stepson, Volodymyr Tubolets.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Anna-Louise Timlin Dunlap; his half-sister, Imoe Dixon Weiner; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.shcolumbus.com for the Dunlap family.
