Herbert Wise Fingerhut, Sr. died Thursday , November 24, 2016 at his
residence with his loving wife of 59 years by his side.
Funeral services will be held at Temple Israel, 1617 Wildwood Avenue, at
2:00 P.M., Sunday, November 27, 2016, with a private interment in Riverdale
Cemetery, according to Striffler Hamby Mortuary. Rabbi Beth Schwartz of
Temple Israel will officiate.
Mr. Fingerhut was born September 1, 1924 in Columbus, GA, the son of Mose
and Elsa Wise Fingerhut. He graduated from Columbus High School with honors,
and from the University of Alabama with a degree in Business and Commerce.
After graduation, Mr. Fingerhut worked for the firm of Wm. F. Loflin & Co. ,CPAs
as a Certified Public Accountant, later becoming a partner in the firm of
Satlof, Hirsch & Fingerhut, CPAs. He served in the U. S. Army during WW2. Mr.
Fingerhut was active in many aspects of the religious, civic, and professional
life of Columbus. He was an Eagle Scout, a 32nd KCH Scottish Rite Mason, past
member of the Columbus Jaycees, Executive Club, and Kiwanis Club. He was a
past President of the Columbus Chapter of the Georgia Society of CPAs, and
served on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association for several
years. He was a member of the Chattahoochee River Club.
Mr. Fingerhut was a member of Temple Israel where he served for many years
as CPA and Treasurer, and later as President of the Board of Trustees.
Mr. Fingerhut was a devoted husband and father and will be remembered by
his family and friends for his infectious laugh and wonderful sense of humor.
He enjoyed playing bridge , traveling, listening to all types of music, and
watching TV.
Mr. Fingerhut was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Barbara
F. Rothschild.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years Joyce Weaver Fingerhut, one son
Dr. Herbert Fingerhut, Jr. (Dr. Amy Kesselman) McLean,VA, one daughter Debbie
Bush (Dr. Robert) Columbus,GA, four grandchildren, Robert Bush, Cary, NC,
Dr. Brian Bush , Nashville, TN, Alexandra Fingerhut and Zachary Fingerhut,
McLean, VA brother-in-law Irwin B. Rothschild, Sr., Los Angeles, CA, one niece
Margaret Rothschild, San Francisco, CA, one nephew Irwin B. Rothschild, III
(Marjorie),Potomac, MD.
The family extends special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Harry Brill and Dr.
George Shannon for their many years of kind and devoted care, and to the
dedicated caregivers, Wanda Morrison, Lekisha , Jamar Brooks, and
Stephanie Smith, with whom he had a special bond.
