A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, February 29, 2016 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2101 Wildwood Ave. Columbus, Georgia at 1:00 PM with Dr. Shane Green officiating. Burial will be in Parkhill Cemetery. A visitation to share memories with his family will be held in the Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of George William Jeter can be made to the John B. Amos Cancer Foundation, 1831 5th Ave. Columbus, Georgia 31904.
George William Jeter was born on March 29, 1935 in Montgomery, Alabama to the late Olive Rebekah Heuy Jeter and James Leo Jeter. He grew up in Enterprise, Alabama where he graduated in 1953 from Coffee County High School. After high school he attended the University of Alabama for four years where he was active in the Army ROTC, Battalion Commander and distinguished Military Graduate, graduating in 1957. Upon his graduation from the University of Alabama he served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army as a Major in Ft. Lee Virginia from 1957 until 1959. After the Army he continued to work for the U.S. Treasury Department as an Internal Revenue Agent in Columbus, Georgia from 1959 until 1966. While he was working for the U.S. Treasury he was continuing to serving his country in the USAR (Detachment Commander, 3297th 1000 Bed Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia, and Major USAR). From 1966 until 1969 he was the Field Audit Supervisor for the U.S. Treasury covering all of North Georgia which included Dalton, Rome, and Gainesville, Georgia. After working with the U.S. Treasury George became the Executive Vice President, and Chief Financial Officer at Aflac, Inc. and affiliates in Columbus, Georgia from 1969 until 1986 when he retired and became a Consultant for Aflac, and was Director and co-owner of Denim North America and Delta Data Software, Inc. (Shareholder and Past Director).
George was a very active member of his community serving as member and chairman in various organizations to include Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Inc. and affiliates, 1985-resigned FY13. Columbus Regional Medical Foundation. Ronald McDonald House of West Georgia he was Vice Chairman. Evergreen Medical Groub Management Committee, Chairman (sold Evergreen, FY 12). Columbus State University Foundation, Past Chairman. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church serving as Chairman of the St. Paul Foundation and Past Chairman of the Capital Fund Drive. Chattahoochee River Club, Rotary Club of Columbus, Past Director, Past Secretary Treasury, and Mary Reed Award, 2010. Columbus Technical College Foundation, Inc. A supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. First Columbus Community Bank, Founding Director and Chairman; Troy University in Phenix City, Alabama. American Hospital Association (AHA); Columbus Medical Center Authority; Georgia Hospital Associtation (GHA); Uptown Columbus Board Member. Other Recognitions; Boy Scouts of America: Second Century Society 2011, Founders Circle Gold Member 2004, The Silver Antelope Award 1991, The Silver Beaver Award 1987; Sertoma Club - Service to Mankind Award 2000; The Family Center, A United Way Agency – Family Champion Award 2000.
He leaves his legacy to his loving wife Jo Jeter of Columbus; Children: Leslie Jeter of Atlanta, and Jim Jeter and his wife Carol of Bonaire; Stepchildren: Rob Jones and his wife Shang of Atlanta, and Heather Ray of Ackworth; grandchildren: Brantley Jeter and Stewart Jeter; Sister, Jill McCain; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives; and his devoted assistant Debby Payne. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and especially loved him.
