She moved to Columbus, Georgia when Elizabeth was young, she graduated from Spencer High School in 1947. After graduating from High School Elizabeth taught school for a brief period. She married Henry J. Hammond on October 17, 1949 and they were blessed with five children. Elizabeth worked at her uncle’s grocery store, Terry’s Market, which was the first Afro-American grocery store in Columbus, Georgia for several years. Then, she became a homemaker and raised her five children.
Elizabeth gave her life to Christ as a teenager. She joined Holsey Chapel CME Church in Columbus and remained a member for more than 50 years. Elizabeth was a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Inspirational Choir, a Bible study group member, and the director of the Mattie Coleman Youth Circle at Holsey Chapel CME Church for several years. She enjoyed attending church, reading, sewing, world traveling, fishing, cooking, baking holiday fruitcakes, and gathering pecans. Her favorite soda was Coca-Cola and her most enjoyable of all was spending time with her family and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Henry J. Hammond. She leaves her loving memory to be cherished by her children: Debra M. Rivers (James), Vernessa K. Hammond, Rodney J. Hammond (Diane), Henri T. Hammond (Martha) and Angela E. Hammond (Catherine) and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren and other family and friends.
A service to celebrate Elizabeth’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at Holsey Chapel CME Church, 718 8th Street, Columbus, Georgia 31901. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31907.
