COLUMBIA A Southern Gentleman, Roland Fisher Smith, Jr. passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015. Roland was a warm and charming man who possessed an effortlessly polite personality. He was devoted to his family, friends and our country. He was proud to be a USMC veteran. Semper Fi. Born August 12, 1929, Roland graduated from Dreher HS and immediately enlisted in the Marine Corps. A technical pioneer during the early years of the computer revolution, he was employed by the SC Department of Social Services for 48 years. He was a natural leader and retired as the Director of Information Services for DSS. He was the son of Roland F. Smith Sr. and Mary F. Smith. He was predeceased by his wife Marguerite R. Smith, sons, Roland F. Smith III and Stanton Smith. He is survived by his children, daughters Cookie Hyatt and Clare Spradley (Paul) and son, Danny Smith; grandchildren, Jennifer, Stanton, Jamie, Dylan, Mike and Hillary; great-grandchildren, Anna, Jack and Adabelle. He is also survived by his lifelong best friend, Col. John S. Brockington (USA Ret) or as they both affectionately referred to each other, “Huss”. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Monday, January 19, 2015 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine St. Chapel, immediately followed by graveside rites at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation is Monday beginning at 1:00PM until the start of the funeral service.
