After receiving her elementary education degree from Columbia College and M.S.W. from USC, Becky worked tirelessly and passionately for decades as a social worker, joyfully serving children in need of adoption, hospice patients and their families, and individuals suffering from substance use disorders. She generously shared her time, talent, and treasure with her family, friends, and parish family at St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
Becky was one of a kind. She was an avid reader, a wonderful cook, and enjoyed working with flowers. She loved to laugh, had a quick and sharp wit, constantly hummed, was a wonderful writer, sent texts a mile long, could never find her keys, was always late, and endeared herself to everyone who knew her.
Becky was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil Lee and Lila Mae Jaco Barber. She is survived by her daughter, Rebekah Ashlee Putnam of Murfreesboro, TN; her siblings, Virgil Barber (Brenda) of Lexington, Susan Fellers (Bill) of Chapin, and Mary Catherine Goldston (Danny) of Florence; father-in-law, William (Granddaddy) Putnam of Murfreesboro; sister-in-law, Susan Wilson (Mark) of Murfreesboro; her beloved nieces and nephews, Suzanne Powell (Jason), Matthew Barber (Jenny), Justin Fellers (Lauren), Sari Catherine Powell (Adam), and Joseph Fellers (Katherine); and Solomon, her constant canine companion.
The family would also like to express their deep gratitude to Jane Trinkley. Her generosity, support, and friendship have meant the world to Becky, Ashlee and their family.
Becky’s love of her family and friends is surpassed only by her love of Christ and His Church.
A private funeral service will be held with interment following at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Memorials may be made to the Basilica of St. Peter, P.O. Box 1896, Columbia, SC 29202; or St. Peter’s Catholic School, 1035 Hampton St., Columbia, SC 29201.
