He is survived by his three sons, Paul K. Sloan, Timothy S. Sloan and Michael J. Sloan; his four grandchildren, Rebekah Rivero (Sloan), Emma Sloan, Michael Sloan and Sarah Sloan; and one great-grandchild, Olive Timmie Rivero.
Stedman was born in Florence, SC to R. Stedman Sloan and Mary Frances Barham on November 12, 1935. He attended South Carolina public schools in Columbia, graduating from University High School in 1953. Upon graduating from high school, Stedman attended the University of South Carolina (1954-1961) where he received a Bachelor’s degree in history and a Master of Law Degree.
Stedman practiced law in Columbia for several years before joining the Department of Veterans Affairs, where he served in positions increasing in responsibility culminating in 23 years as the Director of the Veterans Affairs Regional Office in Columbia, SC. Stedman retired from the Veterans Administration in 1998 and received numerous awards to include the Order of The Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor. Stedman also served as a Staff Judge Advocate in the U.S. Air Force Reserves retiring in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after 24 years of Service.
Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. until 12 p.m., Monday, January 28, 2019 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, 3926 Devine St., Columbia, SC 29205. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
